Frightfully Good Stories - Part I

Editor's Note: In the September issue, I asked for your true stories of ghosts and strange happenings. I also asked my students in York County for their stories. This issue, we have several tales that may very well send chills up your spine. A special thanks to all contributors!
Best of all, I received more stories than I had room for in this issue, so we'll have more of these later. If anyone else has a story to share, you're welcome to submit it for Part II. In addition, I am collecting superstitions for an upcoming article. So, if you know any ways to make yourself lucky, unlucky, or other things, let us know.

The Funeral
I was just six when my uncle Vic died. He was the favorite uncle in my family and no one really knew it until it was too late and the cancer took over. He died quickly. We were driving home after his funeral, the day bright and sunny, when we all noticed a man looking just like uncle Vic walking along the road toward us. We all looked and then looked away. When we looked back, he was gone. But where did he go? The ground was all flat and the land free of trees and bushes. No one could just disappear, could they?
Shocked at what we had seen or thought we
had all seen we continued driving until we came to a red light. With a car in front of us we waited for the light to turn green. All of a sudden my uncle Vic appeared in front of our car and we all froze. He said nothing, just stood there. The light had turned green and the car in front of us drove away.

We however, did not until the apparition disappeared. Then even then I think it was several seconds later.
When my mother started to drive again-we
saw up ahead- an overturned eighteen-wheeler. It had turned the corner and flipped onto the car that was ahead of us, killing all inside. If it hadn't been for my uncle we would have been under that wreckage too.

The Attic and the Open Windows
This story is a continuation of the funeral or
so I think. It was a school day and my mother and I were home while my 4 brothers were at school. We were just watching TV when from upstairs a voice rang out, "Carrrrooooollllll" "Carrrooooolllll" . My mother asked who was there but the voice just kept calling her name. She grabbed her keys and me and ran outside throwing me in the car and returned inside the house to shut all the downstairs windows and lock the doors.
We drove to my Mom-mom's to stay until my brothers were ready to be picked up at school. When school let out we picked my brothers up and returned home. Every door and window in the house was wide open. Why? Who? We did not know, but my brothers quickly grabbed baseball bats and ran into the house to find out. No one was there, but footsteps were heard in the attic.
Climbing the steps to the cool dingy attic was the scariest thing in their lives I think at that moment. But as you guessed it—no one was there. To this day, we do not know why the voice wanted us out of the house.

Casper the Friendly Ghost - or is he?
We were sitting around recanting ghost
stories when I remembered one who took up residence in our home. We didn't name him or weren't even sure he was a he or a she. The lively spirit loved to play tricks and, of course, the youngest in the family got credited with the mischief.
One son enjoyed building model trucks and some had much detail so the older son would lock his bedroom door when he was not at home. Mysterious things happened as pieces of the trucks would be missing only to reappear days or weeks later. Baby brother was scolded for playing with big brother's trucks until it was discovered that the door to the room had been locked and baby brother had no way of getting into the room. It was then we realized we had an unwanted guest.
Another time we had put up mirrored tiles in the bedroom on a Sunday. After the installation, we went away. On our return home we discovered the tiles had been taken down and neatly piled on the floor. None were broken even though we had placed them from floor to ceiling. Who or Boo?
My mother-in-law had given me a plant. I hung it in the window in the bedroom at the head of my bed. In the morning, I was wakened by the sound of the plant crashing to the floor. IT had missed my head by a couple inches. The ghost did not have much use for mothers as every time I put up a plaque about mothers it landed on the floor. To solve the problem, the plant found a new home and the plaques were put up with earthquake glue.
It has been years since our guest has been around. The children are grown, so he/she has found other houses to haunt.

Library Upkeep
During the month of September, 99 items were checked out by 95 visitors.
We are pleased to announce the arrival of our new photo-copier. It is great for newsletter publication and will allow us to better serve the copying needs of our visitors.
It's getting snow time again. On days when school is delayed or canceled because of bad weather, there will be no Story Hour. If in doubt, call the library at 363-2418.

School Bus
Off exit 17 on I-83, it was said that a bus
was going around a sharp curve and its brakes went out. It broke through the barrier and went down a steep hill and off a cliff. The driver was not alone. A bus full of children drove off the cliff with the driver. To this day, the children still roam the area.
Unbelieving people today pull their cars
around the barrier and all the warning signs. As they pull down to the edge of the cliff and put the car in neutral, the now-believing people are amazed that they are moving backward, pushed to safety in a ditch. When they get out to inspect the area, they see the front of their car is covered with hand prints - hand prints of children - 20 pairs, the exact number of children in the bus. But on the rear of the car there is one set trying to push you back down the cliff - the bus driver's. Was the crash really an accident or did the bus driver purposely drive the bus off the cliff?

Rehymeyers Hollow
Down in Rehymeyers Hollow there is a
bridge where, if you drive across, you will either see the image of Rehymeyer or something bad will happen. Well, a bunch of us being all tough thought as everyone else does that these stories are not true.
So, we made the 6 mile trip down to the Hollow and found the bridge that all the stories have come from. I began to drive my Jeep, which only had 170 miles on it, over the bridge. About 3/4 of the way over the bridge, my Jeep shut off completely and would not start up. The person in the passenger seat looked over the edge of the bridge to make sure nothing was near us, but that was a mistake. Over the water was an image with no face features and not legs - but it was floating over the water. Just as I saw the image, the Jeep finally started up again. Needless to say, that is the last I entered into Rehymeyers Hollow.
