New Albany Methodist Church

Methodist ChurchThe present Methodist Church was built in 1869, and dedicated in 1870. Additions to the church were the left wing in 1919 and the adjoining parsonage built in 1901. The first electric lighting in the church was in 1914.

The first pastor of the New Albany Methodist Church was Rev. Joseph Merring, who served the church for two years. Rev. Merring died in 1906 and is buried beside his wife, Amelia Rinebold Merring, in the Overton Methodist Cemetery.

The Methodist Church lost its steeple in an electric storm on Aug. 7, 1920 when lightning struck the steeple and shattered it, sending it crashing to the ground. The story passed on by "old-timers" was that the church occasionally was used to show films, because the schools and other buildings lacked the facilities. Showing films in the church was considered a "heinous sin" by some of the church patrons. As things happened, a film was shown in the church and a few days later the steeple was struck by lightning. Some thought this was an act of God as punishment for the sin committed a few days earlier.

The Methodist Church and the Baptist Church combined to become the New Albany Cooperative Parish in June of 1970. The first sermon was on July 5 by Rev. John J. Plant. The current pastor is Rev. Ronald Troup.
